- It was supposed to be the easiest job of my summer.
When I accepted the nanny position for the Bennett family, I thought it would be another weekend babysitting gig. The parents were successful, lived in a beautiful house, and needed someone responsible while they handled “an important business trip.” They offered great pay, left a detailed schedule, stocked the fridge with groceries, and promised they’d be back Sunday evening.
Nothing felt strange.
When I pulled into the driveway that Friday afternoon, the front door swung open before I could even knock.
“You’re finally here!” a girl with waist-length knotless braids grinned, phone already in her hand. “I’m Zariah. Mom said you’re the nanny.”
She looked me up and down before smiling.
“I like your shoes.”
Behind her came a boy dribbling a basketball through the hallway.
“You play 2K?” he asked before introducing himself as Jaylen.
Before I could answer, a little girl skipped into the entryway carrying a baby doll almost as big as she was.
“I’m Nylah!” she announced proudly. “Do you know how to braid hair? Can you make pancakes? Mommy says I ask too many questions, but I don’t think I do.”
A tiny toddler peeked around the corner holding a blue blanket. He stared at me for a second before quietly hiding behind his sister’s leg.
“And that’s Kairo,” Zariah laughed. “He’s shy for, like… five minutes.”
The house immediately felt alive.
Music played softly from a speaker in the kitchen. Someone had cartoons paused on the living room TV. The smell of fresh cookies drifted through the downstairs. Family pictures covered the walls—birthday parties, vacations, football games, dance recitals, Christmas mornings.
Everything about the Bennett family looked… normal.
A few minutes later, their parents came downstairs with suitcases.
Marcus Bennett smiled as he shook my hand.
“Thanks again for helping us out.”
Sophia Bennett handed me a folder.
“Emergency contacts, school information, allergies, Wi-Fi password, bedtime routines, everything you’ll need.”
She laughed.
“I know it looks like a lot, but after the first day you’ll be fine.”
The kids barely looked up.
It was obvious they were used to having sitters.
Sophia hugged each of them.
“Be good.”
“We will,” they answered together.
