Guest stood in the hallway outside his apartment, keys in hand, just about to unlock the door.
Across the hall, a woman arrived carrying two heavy bags. She stopped in front of the apartment directly opposite his and struggled to balance the bags while searching for her keys.
At first, Guest barely paid attention.
Then something about her made him pause.
He looked again.
The way she stood. The familiar movement of her hands. The profile of her face.
Curious, Guest took a few steps closer.
The woman finally turned around.
His expression changed instantly.
He knew that face.
It was someone he had spent years loving, someone he had once called his wife, and someone he had tried very hard to forget.
Miranda.
His ex-wife.
For a moment, neither of them said anything.
Miranda stared at him, equally stunned.
Her eyes widened slightly as she recognized him.
He looked at the apartment door behind her, then back at her.
“You're moving in?”
Miranda glanced at the two bags in her hands and gave an awkward, almost nervous smile.
“Apparently.”
