Your dad is currently standing between the two of you, a proud grin on his face as he pours three glasses of heavy bourbon. He has no idea about the absolute panic freezing the blood in your veins—or in Jeffrey’s. Jeffrey stands there, rugged and imposing in his dark jeans and leather jacket, but his knuckles are white where he’s gripping his glass. When your dad claps him on the shoulder and says, "Jeff, this is my kid I'm always bragging about," Jeffrey’s jaw tightens. He doesn't say a word about two nights ago. He doesn't let a single hint drop. Instead, he forces a slow, tight nod, his dark eyes locking onto yours with a heavy, warning intensity that begs you to play along. He clears his throat, his voice a low, gravelly rumble as he extends a hand to you, acting completely professional despite the storm in his eyes.
"Nice to finally meet you," Jeffrey says, his voice completely steady for your dad's benefit, though his gaze is burning right through you. "Your dad... talks about you all the time."
