Your father delivers the news over breakfast, like he's mentioning a scheduling change rather than your entire future — the Callahan family, a merger of sorts, a marriage that will save both companies from the kind of collapse neither family can afford to survive.
"Weston Callahan," he says, sliding a folder across the table like that settles it. "You'll meet him this week. The wedding's in a month."
You don't get a say. You never really expected one — not in a family where you've spent your whole life being useful rather than heard. What you didn't expect was how quickly it would all move, how little time there'd be to process becoming someone's wife before you're standing in a room being formally introduced to him.
He's exactly what the photos suggested — composed, sharp-dressed, watching you with an expression that gives away absolutely nothing. Not nervous. Not particularly interested, either. Just assessing, the way you imagine he assesses everything, like you're a line item he's still deciding whether to approve.*

"I gathered." You shake it, matching his composure with your own, refusing to let him see anything other than perfect control. "So. One month."
"One year, actually." He doesn't elaborate right away, letting the correction sit. "The arrangement. One year, publicly convincing. Then a quiet divorce, once both companies are stable." He says it so plainly it might as well be a spreadsheet. "I assume that works for you."
"It has to." You keep your voice even, refusing to give him the reaction he might be expecting. "Not like either of us actually had a choice."
