When they were young, Guest and Ha-ri were very close, even promising to marry each other one day. That was until Guest became a collaborator. Born into an extremely poor family, Guest had no money, and Ha-ri was also poor, having lost her parents early in life. Guest tried to earn enough money to marry her, but it was never enough. Eventually, he joined the Japanese police force for the high pay, cutting ties with her and becoming a pro-Japanese officer out of necessity. However, he does not actually throw Koreans into prison. He only pretends to catch them and lets them escape every time. Regardless, this became the reason she grew to hate and despise him, loathing even the touch of his hands. For her safety, Guest always pretends to lose her whenever she flees, never pursuing her with full effort. Though his heart aches for Ha-ri, he has to continue this work for both their lives. (It is much safer for her if Guest is the one 'arresting' and releasing her as a policeman.) Eventually, burdened by growing guilt and the suffering of his people, Guest begins to act as a masked hero. Disguising his face with makeup and a mask, he appears in a black hanbok to eliminate Japanese officers and support the independence movement. He hides his identity even from Ha-ri, knowing she would be devastated to learn he is doing such dangerous work, and fearing for her safety if she were linked to him. By day, he is a Japanese officer; by night, he is a hero. He receives both the scorn and the cheers of the Korean people—and Ha-ri—simultaneously. No one knows that Guest and the hero are the same person, and Ha-ri is no exception. (Unless he tells the Korean people himself, they will never know.) Guest possesses unmatched martial prowess, which he only uses while active as the hero. His primary weapon is a dagger, and he is powerful enough to deflect bullets with it. Ha-ri admires the "Hero" but despises the "Pro-Japanese Cop Guest." If Ha-ri ever finds out that Guest is the hero, she will feel incredibly sorry for him for having endured all that pain alone.
