In the darkness, your consciousness slowly drifts to the surface. You can't see anything. You feel pressure against your eyes, and it takes a moment to realize you're blindfolded. In that same instant, a strange sensation runs through your arms and legs. You try to move, but you can't budge an inch. You are restrained.
……Ah, so you're finally awake. A voice comes from right nearby. A light tone, with a regional drawl. But the distance is too close. Close enough that you can almost feel his breath. Scary being blindfolded, ain't it? Well, I guess I got no choice. You feel fingers on the cloth. The knot is undone slowly, deliberately, as if to tease you.
The blindfold slips away and your vision opens up. In the blurred light, the first thing you see— Is the face of a man peering down at you. He's close. There's nowhere to run. His gaze is observant, and his mouth is twisted into a somewhat amused smile. ……That's a real nice face. I'm Kagura Rindo. ……I'll be the one "keepin' you company" from today on. You've got info on your old man, don't ya? I'll be real nice to ya, so just spit it all out. His fingertips lightly lift your chin, locking your gaze to his. ……But you know, if you stay quiet... you can imagine what'll happen, right?
Wh...? Unable to process the situation, a voice that was little more than a breath escaped your lips.
Hearing Guest's dazed voice, the corners of his mouth lifted slightly. Not fear, not anger, but pure confusion. That reaction seemed strangely amusing to him.
……Wh-at? God, you're cute.
Standing beside the chair, he glanced over Guest's entire body as if looking down at them. The leather belts securing the wrists, the metal fittings at the ankles. Both were tightly locked, not the kind of thing that could be removed with bare hands.
I'll give ya a quick rundown. You're the son (daughter) of an underworld boss, right? My job is just to pull info out of ya. That's it.
It was a sterile room. Bare concrete walls, a single fluorescent light hanging from the ceiling. No windows. Only the low hum of the air conditioning filled the space. Where had you been taken from, and why were you here— The man in front of you held those answers.
He pulled leather gloves from his pocket and pulled them on one hand at a time with practiced ease.
Well, don't look so scared. If you talk to me nice and honest, I won't do anything that hurts.
……Probably, anyway.
The moment he heard the name, he gave a soft smile. This time, his eyes were smiling too.
Guest, huh. That's a nice name.
It was a simple, honest impression. Not as an executioner, but as a regular twenty-eight-year-old man. But in the next instant, that smile had already taken on a different color.
He ran his gloved fingertips through Guest's dark hair. It was a gesture like petting a dog, yet a bit more delicate.
Guest. I'm gonna explain the rules now, okay?
If you answer my questions, you get a "reward." If you can't answer, or if you lie—you get a "punishment."
Simple, right?
He gave Guest's shoulder a light pat and stood up.
It's late already, so get some sleep. The real work starts tomorrow.
As he was about to leave the room, he suddenly looked back.
Don't go thinkin' about tryin' to escape. We're underground here.
The heavy door closed, followed by the sound of a key turning twice. Then, the sound of receding footsteps. Eventually, only silence remained.
The faint buzzing of the fluorescent light and the wind from the air conditioner. That was the only BGM in this confined space. There was no clock, and no way to tell what was happening outside. You couldn't even tell if it was day or night.
——The Monitor Room.
He sank deep into a folding chair, staring at the images from the small cameras lining the wall. On the screen was the figure of Guest, shifting restlessly while bound to the chair.
……So you really don't know anything, huh?
That was the most troublesome pattern for Rindo. If there was no information to extract, he should normally release the subject or switch to a different target. But Rindo had applied for neither to his superiors.
While staring blankly at Guest on the screen.
That face... it's cheating……
He muttered to himself, his voice trailing off into the empty room.
