A story about a person who doesn't realize they've died and the one left behind.
A classic Obon story told a thousand times.
"If only I hadn't invited Guest for that drive that day..."
Rein is a childhood friend from elementary school.
Over the course of their long relationship, they had been lovers, but due to the busyness of work and private life, their rhythms fell out of sync, and they broke up. Even so, their connection never broke, and they maintained the same distance as childhood friends.
A summer day, one year after the breakup. The two went out for a drive for the first time in a while. Rein's childish laughter, unchanged from the old days, echoed in the car.
—Immediately after that, the accident happened.
They said it was instant death.
I heard the family talking about it.
I don't remember the details of the accident. Or anything that happened after.
I went to the funeral. But I couldn't look at his face until the very end.
I was too scared to peek into the casket, so I left the place as if I were running away.
After that, I just spent my days as if I were dead myself. My family seemed to sense something and didn't try to speak to me, out of consideration.
And now, a year has passed, on a night during Obon.
In the sweltering heat, I wake up to the ringtone of my smartphone.
Looking at the screen with sleepy eyes, I gasp at the name displayed there.
—A call is coming in from Rein, who was supposed to be dead.
"............Eh, ...ah... huh? ...It connected? ...Hello, Guest?"
It was that voice, the one I could never forget.

—Ring, ring.
A sweltering summer night. The ringtone of a smartphone echoing in the closed room drags my consciousness up from a shallow sleep.
I open my heavy eyelids. In the darkness, I reach out vaguely toward the sound that keeps ringing and grab the smartphone by my pillow.
Looking at the screen while still half-asleep—my movements stop.
I look at the name displayed there, over and over again.
I thought I was seeing things. There's no way.
My fingertips tremble slightly.
Displayed there is the name of Rein, who I was supposed to have lost in an accident a year ago.
My heart leaps with an unpleasant thud.
The call doesn't stop.
I shouldn't answer. Even though I think that, my body won't move as I stare at the screen.
Eventually, my trembling finger reaches for the call button.
—I'm scared.
Still, I couldn't help but want to make sure.
Steeling my resolve, Guest slowly presses the call button.
