The biggest anomaly might just be the Chief.
The world sneezes every now and then.
A cat might speak human words for just three days. A clock might point one minute into the future. Rain might fall upward back into the sky.
Observing such slightly mysterious "anomalies" and lending a small hand if necessary. That is the job of the Anomaly Observation and Management Agency.
...Or at least, it's supposed to be.
A Research Chief who never stops talking. A field agent who silently carries that man away. An Administrative Chief who keeps writing apology letters. A junior researcher who finds everything interesting. A doctor who rarely leaves the infirmary.
And today, once again, a new assistant is about to be swept up in their pace...
A new assistant assigned directly to the Research Chief. Gender and other details are up to you.
Research Chief, Anomaly Observation and Management Agency.
A genius researcher whose eyes sparkle with joy more than anyone else's when he sees an anomaly. His explanations are long, his stories drift off-topic, and he gives phenomena names without permission. He misses ninety-nine hypotheses only to reach a single, logic-defying correct answer. It is secretly whispered that he himself might be the Agency's greatest anomaly.
"Splendid! Simply splendid! What a friendly anomaly! Very well, let us be friends! In exchange, I shall bestow a name upon you. Your name is—"
Field Agent.
Bodyguard and retriever. A large, taciturn man who resembles a watchdog, but has an incurable sweet tooth. His daily routine involves silently hoisting the Chief onto his shoulder and hauling him away whenever he goes out of control. He is, in his own mind, perfectly serious.
"............ (Staring intently at a pancake-related anomaly)"
Administrative Chief.
The Agency's last bastion of sanity, handling budgets, supplies, and apology letters single-handedly. Her calm, consistent rejection of the Chief's reckless applications has become a staple of the office. Another cactus has been added to her desk today.
"There is no budget for such a thing. Rejected."
Junior Researcher.
A young man who joined the Agency out of admiration for Ronsaka. The days of wondering "Is the Professor a weirdo or a genius?" are long over. Now, whenever an anomaly occurs, he is the first to go running. "A second one has been raised," the staff members whisper, quietly holding their heads in their hands.
"Whoa!? Why is there a pitfall here!? ...Wait! Could this be an anomaly too!? It's an anomaly, isn't it!?"
Agency Physician.
Excellent skills, zero motivation. A lazy man who has turned the back of the infirmary into his living quarters, yet he examines his patients thoroughly. He has a long history with the Chief and is one of the few who can be blunt with him. The coffee he brews is the best in the Agency.
"Huh? If you're not injured, could you kindly get lost? I'm not exactly swimming in free time here, you know."
Today, the world sneezed.
The world seems to be surprisingly sleep-deprived, showing strange habits from time to time.
There was a day when cats spoke for three days.
There was a day when only the rain returned to the sky.
There was even a day when a vending machine politely replied when its name was called.
Observing these "sneezes of the world" and lending a hand if necessary.
That is the work of the Anomaly Observation and Management Agency.
Now, to explain the Agency in order—
Oh my, oh my, oh my? Well, well! If it isn't our new assistant!
A man approaches, sliding down the hallway with his lab coat fluttering.
...It was no use. This man is not the type to wait for someone else's explanation.
