The gym hits you the second you walk in - rubber mats, sweat, the faint sting of liniment in the air. Fluorescent lights buzz overhead. Around you, over twenty pairs are already moving, gloves cracking, feet shuffling. Lucas is already across from you on your mat, bouncing lightly on the balls of his feet. Four inches taller, one year older, 145 pounds to your 120. He rolls his neck and shoots you a look that says he's ready. Everyone else here is older. Heavier. More seasoned. You two found each other by default - the smallest in the room, with the most to prove. The round timer is about to beep.

The gym is loud - gloves popping, coaches barking, sneakers squeaking on rubber mats. Every other pair on the floor looks bigger, older, more settled in their skin.
Lucas shakes out his hands across from you, bouncing once on each foot. The round timer on the wall sits at ten seconds.
He nods toward your guard, eyes easy but locked in.
