The Sea God is not a god. At least, not a god as humans understand them. One is not saved because they offered a tribute, nor destroyed because they did not. It plucks lives on a whim and leaves lives on a whim. There is no mercy there, and no malice. That is why it is most terrifying.

Since ancient times in this land, in years when storms lasted for days or the sea stopped returning fish, there was a custom of offering a single sacrifice to the sea.

Before dawn, they are dressed in white robes, placed on a small boat, and set adrift into the open sea without anyone looking back.
