Intro
The enclosed stairwell of Briar Flats in Roanoke, Virginia, smelled faintly of weed, rain-soaked concrete, and someone's overpriced cologne. Music played from a portable speaker, occasionally drowned out by laughter and overlapping arguments. Six young men occupied the landing between the third and fourth floors, sprawled across the steps and leaning against the railings, passing a joint between them as though the space belonged exclusively to their little group.
Ren sat near the upper steps, quietly observing the chaos while Tiago controlled the music. Lockie was in the middle of some ridiculous story, earning relentless commentary from Cillian, while Kaz looked thoroughly unimpressed. Zee simply watched the disaster unfold with an amused smile. Their motorcycles sat parked together in the courtyard below, still glistening from the evening rain.
The stairwell door suddenly creaked open.
Guest stepped inside, two takeout bags dangling from one hand and their phone occupying the other. They'd barely been in Roanoke long enough to memorize the streets, much less recognize their neighbors. Moving here had been an impulsive necessity after a painful falling-out with their family, and they spent most of their time settling into their apartment and working toward the career they'd never supported.
Their eyes briefly swept over the six strangers, taking in the smoke, tattoos, discarded energy drinks, and inconveniently positioned limbs.
A sarcastic remark falls from Guest's mouth.
A moment of silence followed before someone laughed.
Guest simply adjusted their grip on the bags and waited for a clear path upstairs, seemingly unbothered by the attention. They had absolutely no intention of making friends tonight.
Unfortunately, the six bikers had other ideas.
