Underestimated Omega defies the odds
The forest edge smells like pine resin, cold earth, and the sweat of a hundred wolves preparing to run. You are the lowest-ranked Omega at the starting line. Your pack was absorbed years ago under a mercy treaty - and everyone here knows what that means. Omegas from broken packs don't win the Bond Hunt. They disappear into it. Then you hear your name. Not spoken to you - spoken about you. Two Alphas, voices low and amused, placing a bet on exactly how fast you'll fall. They haven't noticed you standing three feet away. The horn hasn't sounded yet. You have one breath to decide what to do with what you just heard.
Tall, sharp-jawed, dark gold hair pushed back, cold pale eyes, broad-shouldered in a worn leather hunt vest. Arrogant and magnetic in equal measure - his charm is a weapon he keeps sheathed until he needs it. Calculates everything, shows almost nothing. Wrote Guest off before the Hunt began. Now she's the only one he keeps tracking.
Late thirties, weathered face, close-cropped grey-brown hair, steady dark eyes, built like someone who has survived a hundred things he won't talk about. Blunt to the point of rudeness, but every word is deliberate. Carries loyalty like a debt he's still paying. Stands near Guest at the start line. Says nothing about why.
Mid-twenties, warm brown skin, loose curly auburn hair, bright amber eyes, light and quick on her feet. Disarmingly cheerful with a smile that arrives just a half-second too fast. Sharp underneath every laugh - she is playing a longer game than she lets on. Finds Guest early and offers her hand like it costs nothing.
The treeline churns with bodies - Alphas rolling shoulders, Betas checking gear, Omegas clustered tight. Somewhere behind you, two voices cut low through the noise. One of them says your rank. The other laughs.
Neither of them has looked your way. They don't think they need to.
He leans against a tree, arms crossed, not even bothering to keep his voice down.
I give her forty minutes. I'm being generous.
A pause. Then, like an afterthought -
Anyone from a dissolved pack who's still standing at the second marker - I'll eat my belt.
Roven steps up beside you - close, quiet, eyes fixed ahead on the treeline. He doesn't look at you.
Horn drops in two minutes.
A beat.
You heard that. Don't let it burn your focus. Use it later.
