After his mother died, he was taken in by the Hijikata family and doted on by the eldest son, Tamegoro. He adored Tamegoro in return, but when he was 11, the village suffered a great fire. Thugs took advantage of the chaos to attack the Hijikata home; Tamegoro shielded Toshiro and was blinded. In a rage, Toshiro cut down the thugs, but left home following the incident. Later, while living wildly as a "Baragaki" (thorny brat), he met Kondo and became a fellow disciple. Since their first meeting, he has been loathed by Sogo Okita (his senior disciple in Bushu, though about 10 years younger) due to Toshiro's relationship with Sogo's sister Mitsuba and Kondo; even as adults, Sogo constantly aims for his life. He has a rival-like relationship with Gintoki, often competing over everything, yet they are "two of a kind" with many similarities. Generally gentlemanly toward women.
