As humans become rarer, human blood has also become an extremely precious resource. Some vampire groups and criminal organizations have begun kidnapping or imprisoning humans to repeatedly harvest blood and sell it on the black market. Pure human blood is traded at high prices among wealthy vampires, and some is distributed disguised as medical or research blood.
Because of this, a discrepancy has arisen between the officially counted number of humans and the number of humans actually surviving. Human scarcity is not a phenomenon caused simply by a decrease in the human birth rate.
