Intro
Plot Summary Returning from his date with Ms. Okudera, Taki sees a message on his smartphone left by Mitsuha saying a comet will pass tonight, but he doesn't understand it. He tries calling her out of curiosity, but she doesn't answer. A monologue follows, stating that their bodies never swapped again. Unable to stop thinking about the unreachable Mitsuha, Taki uses a photo he saw at an exhibition during his date and his own sketches of the town landscape he saw while swapped to search for her. The town of Itomori was gone; in its place was only a massive lake created by a fragment of the Tiamat comet that struck three years ago. The damage was severe because an autumn festival was being held in the impact zone, drawing a large crowd. Immediately after the impact, a massive tsunami triggered by the shockwave swept through the town, dragging houses into the lake. Arriving at the Miyamizu family shrine in the rain, Taki drinks the Kuchikamizake containing half of Mitsuha's soul to turn back time. As he tries to stand, he slips on the wet floor. In that moment, he sees Musubi—Mitsuha's past, her memories, and the circumstances of the comet strike. When he wakes up, he is in Mitsuha's body. Mitsuha, now back in her own body, uses what she learned from Taki to instruct Tessie to execute their plan. They blow up the substation and issue an evacuation warning over the town broadcast, but the residents don't follow as hoped. To make matters worse, Sayaka is caught by teachers and the broadcast is cut; her father, the mayor, broadcasts an order for everyone to stay put while the accident is investigated. Mitsuha runs to persuade her father, trying to remember the boy's name, but it won't come to her.
Taki is sitting in a corner of the library, at the very table where Guest is seated. His mind is currently filled entirely with Mitsuha Miyamizu. Like waking from a dream, the memories of the body-swapping are starting to feel hazy, and the more they fade, the more anxious he becomes.
He puts down his smartphone and looks up. Spread out before him are regional history collections he grabbed at random, reports on depopulated areas from the Statistics Bureau, and records of small-scale festivals across Japan. 'Itomori Village...' Taki mutters softly, scanning the table of contents. Her name and where she lived. Taki tries to find the village on a map, but it's harder to find than the complex subway lines of Tokyo.
Just then, he hears the faint sound of a page turning from the opposite table. Taki looks up and sees Guest sitting there. The book Guest is reading looks like a very old magazine published at a regional level.
Summoning his courage, Taki speaks cautiously. "Um, Guest..."

Mitsuha Miyamizu, a girl living in the deep mountain village of Itomori, is the eldest granddaughter of the Miyamizu shrine family. She lives according to family traditions, weaving threads and making Kuchikamizake. Her father, who left the house, ignores them to focus on his mayoral election, leading Mitsuha to resent the small town where the train only comes once every two hours, constantly saying she wants to leave for Tokyo. She begins to have strange dreams where she lives someone else's life, but forgets them upon waking. Taki, a boy in Tokyo, also becomes a girl in a mountain village in his dreams, but the memory vanishes when he wakes. One day, they realize things they don't remember doing have happened around them. They spend time together, even offering the Kuchikamizake containing Mitsuha's soul at the family shrine. However, Mitsuha's grandmother Hitoha senses something and asks Taki, 'Are you dreaming right now?' at which point Taki wakes up in tears. Mitsuha appears at the autumn festival with her hair cut short at her friends' suggestion. This is the day of the festival and the day the comet is closest. Tessie and Sayaka look at her with concern, wondering what happened. Mitsuha then witnesses the comet splitting over Itomori and falling to earth. Returning from his date with Ms. Okudera, Taki sees Mitsuha's message about the comet but doesn't understand. He calls, but she doesn't answer. They never swap again. Obsessed with finding her, Taki uses his sketches to search for the town. He finds only a lake where Itomori used to be, destroyed by the Tiamat comet fragment three years ago. The casualties were high due to the festival. Taki reaches the shrine, drinks the Kuchikamizake, and sees Mitsuha's memories through Musubi. He wakes up as Mitsuha. A day before the meteor hit, Mitsuha had gone to Tokyo to meet Taki. She found him on a train, but because of a three-year time gap, the Taki she met didn't know her yet. She called his name, but he treated her like a stranger. Heartbroken, she prepared to get off at Yotsuya Station, but Taki, sensing something, asked for her name. Mitsuha handed him her orange hair ribbon and told him her name. Taki, desperate not to forget, tried to write her name on his palm but forgot it the moment he tried.
