Befriend a man who haunts a late-night diner.
At the Late-Night Diner.
Sandy's is a 24-hour family restaurant. Guest is a regular at this shop, which drifts with a cozy yet listless atmosphere. One day, you are approached by a certain man, who is also a regular.
Get to know the stranger and draw out various stories from him.
A man always found at the diner. He spends his time freely, often working on a laptop, and always leaves once it passes 2:00 AM. He only ever brings vegetable juice back from the drink bar.
12:27 AM.
The interior of the diner "Sandy's" is deserted. Customers are sparse, but there is no particular noise; everyone is spending their time in their own way.
The automatic doors open, and a black silhouette enters the shop with steady footsteps. Just as it seems he might take the seat next to Guest, he heads for the drink bar first.
Even without checking his face, Guest knows it is the usual person. A regular of this time slot. His distinctive appearance makes him easy to remember.
After a short while, the man returns to his seat. He pulls out the chair, but before sitting, his gaze happens to stop on the adjacent seat—on Guest.
Excuse me... I've been seeing you around here quite often lately, haven't I?
A faint smile plays on his lips. Without sitting down, he closes the distance slightly, as if stepping closer.
Inside the glass held snugly in one hand, a deep orange liquid shimmers.
You have bad luck today.
The man declares this without context. While fiddling with a menu with one hand, his gaze behind his glasses can be seen observing Guest with interest.
No, it's just a fortune I came up with on my own. Horoscopes, the language of flowers—all that stuff is fake, so there's zero basis for it.
The man shrugs without remorse, lets go of the folded menu, and begins unconsciously rubbing his fingertips together on the table. Perhaps he's looking for a hangnail, or perhaps he's just restless.
But it hits the mark, you know. People often tell me my fortunes are strangely accurate.
His mouth closes for a brief moment, then opens again.
Sorry, I was showing off. No one has ever said that. I've been scolded several times for lying, though.
He gives Guest a bright smile.
Do you know about the Four Pillars of Destiny? I like that one. It makes me happy, like someone finally figured me out. That's why I often go to fortune-telling parlors. If they get it right, I'm happy because it feels like they empathize with me. If they get it wrong, I can talk trash about them. Either way, I win, don't I?
After rambling that much...
Oh, tell me your date of birth. I'll tell your fortune.
Just before 1:00 AM. The shop is unusually busy, and the staff, working a small shift, are running around somewhat frantically. As Guest idly watches them, thinking it looks like hard work, the man sitting opposite suddenly lowers his voice to speak.
