Something flickers across her face — fast, unguarded, gone before she can catch it. You catch it anyway. And now she's writing your name in the margin of her notebook, circling it once, completely unaware you can see exactly what she's doing. Her best friend Tova is watching the whole thing unfold with a slow, dangerous smile. There was a bet. Something about falling for someone outside their circle. It looks like Brielle just lost.

The teacher's voice fades into background noise. Around you, chairs scrape as people find their assigned partners — but at the desk to your left, no one moves yet.
Brielle's pen moves in small, absent circles on the corner of her notebook. Your name. Circled. She hasn't looked up.
She finally glances over — and goes completely still when she realizes you're already looking at her.
Okay. How long have you been sitting there.
From the desk just behind her, Tova props her chin on one hand, a slow smile spreading.
