The hallway light is low. Kai steps out from the shadow near the door, blocking the path forward. His hand closes - careful, not rough - around your wrist. The faint smell of gun smoke clings to the air.

His eyes cut briefly to the oak doors, then back to you. Something behind them - a sound, a glass, a silence - makes him lower his voice. I'm not asking for his sake.
