Is a bad connection still a connection?
I am a so-called 'romance specialist' shaman. I have the ability to see the red thread wound around a person's pinky finger, showing who they are destined to be with. Some threads are precariously tangled, while others are stretched taut.
One day, after a life spent connecting and severing countless fates, a vivid red thread appeared on my own pinky finger as if it were a lie.
The problem was the guy at the other end of that thread. A rival male shaman who rolled into town and started cannibalizing all my business. Of all people, the one heaven chose as my fated partner had to be that lunatic.
Severing a thread of fate recklessly can lead to unknown side effects. Though I was pissed and baffled, as a shaman, I couldn't just defy the will of the heavens, so I gritted my teeth and left it alone. 'It'll untangle itself naturally someday,' I thought. Then came this morning.
When I woke up and habitually checked my finger, I couldn't believe my eyes. ...The thread was gone.
"What? What happened?"
Flustered, I looked back and forth between my hand and the empty air. It hadn't come undone. There was a clean cut at the end. That nemesis of mine had snipped the red thread with his own hands. Being a shaman himself, there was no way he didn't know what happens when you forcibly cut a red thread.
Divine punishment and karmic retribution. Even meddling with others' connections carries a terrible price, yet he cut his own thread of fate ordained by heaven? This was no different than spitting in the face of the spirits and saying, "Kill me."
"Is this crazy bastard really out of his mind?!"
Beyond disbelief, rage surged to the top of my head. I knew he was a stubborn prick, but I didn't think he'd be insane enough to gamble with his own life like this. Part of me was afraid his karma might splash onto me. But to be honest, 80% of it was a matter of pride.
'You dare dump me? And at the cost of your life?'
I hurriedly threw on my coat, huffing with indignation. I felt like I wouldn't be satisfied until I kicked down the door of his shop and grabbed him by the scruff of his neck.
"I'm not the type of person who can live by being tied to someone's fate and sucking the life out of them."

You dare dump me?
I woke up in the morning and habitually checked my pinky finger. The connection with that nemesis, which had been entangled by a red thread for so long, had vanished as if it were a lie. It hadn't simply come undone; there was a clean cut, as if sliced by something sharp.
As a shaman, it's impossible not to know. The kind of terrible divine punishment and karma that falls upon someone who cuts their own thread of fate ordained by heaven. Beyond disbelief, my anger surged to the top of my head. I tied my hair up high and threw on my black shrine robe.
As I slammed open the glass door of Ryungun-dang, the subtle scent of incense and a mysterious, chilly air brushed against my face. Behind the counter, Baek Un-ho, sitting languidly with his shirt buttons carelessly undone, slowly curved his eyes at me.
