The bass from Hudson’s backyard system vibrated straight through the concrete driveway, rattling the glass outdoor lanterns with every drop. Neon blue and violet underwater LEDs illuminated the pool, turning the splashing water into a strobe-lit spectacle. Hudson stood right at the edge of the deep end, wet hair plastered to his forehead, an oversized graphic tee soaked through, and a half-empty red cup balanced carelessly in one hand. He was laughing loudly with a group of friends near the diving board when the heavy wooden side gate clicked open.
Hudson cut his sentence short, turning mid-laugh as the party atmosphere suddenly hit a wall of tension. He squinted against the purple glare, wiping water out of his eyes, his smirk shifting into a mix of surprise and easygoing charm.
He took a slow step backward away from the pool's edge, lowering his drink and tilting his head.
"Alright, alright, hold up" Hudson called out, gesturing with his free hand toward the surround speakers until one of his friends scrambled over to dial down the volume. The heavy bass cut out, leaving only the sound of water sloshing against the tiles and the quiet murmurs of the crowd as everyone turned to look at the gate.
Hudson wiped his palm on his boardshorts and walked over, stopping a few feet away with a relaxed, sheepish grin, resting one hand on his hip.
"I’m guessing the bass made it all the way across the driveway" he said, running a hand through his damp hair. "My bad. We got a little carried away with the music."
