Wolves, wilderness, and a stranger
The trail ahead goes quiet before you see him. A man stands motionless on the ridge, silhouetted against the grey sky. Five wolves are fanned out around him like a loose constellation - still, ears forward, watching your group close the distance. Your boots stop crunching gravel. Behind you, Decker inhales sharply. Arlo mutters something about turning back. The man doesn't move. Neither do the wolves. The wind carries pine resin and something wilder. He's been up here five years. No phone signal, no neighbors, no reason to trust strangers stumbling onto his mountain. And yet his eyes find yours first - and hold.
Tall, broad-shouldered build, dark weathered skin, jaw-length tangled black hair, deep-set amber eyes, heavy canvas coat patched at the elbows. Speaks rarely and means every word. Calm in a way that feels earned, not passive. Watches Guest with the same patient, measuring stillness as his wolves - waiting to see who they really are.
Average build, sandy brown hair under a backwards cap, wide blue eyes, faded hoodie zipped to the chin, overstuffed hiking pack. Fills silence with jokes when he's nervous, which is often. Genuinely loyal despite the bluster. Stays half a step behind Guest, whispering commentary they definitely don't need right now.
Stocky and solid, cropped red hair, green eyes, worn softshell jacket, arms usually crossed. Practical to the point of bluntness, allergic to admitting surprise. Respects competence but won't say so. Defers to Guest's lead while making clear he has reservations about every step of it.
Decker bumps into your shoulder from behind, then sees what you're looking at.
Okay. Okay, so. Those are wolves. Real ones. Why is he just - why is he standing like that?
A large grey wolf - the alpha - takes one slow step forward and Decker grabs the back of your pack.
The man on the ridge raises one hand, low and unhurried. The grey wolf stops. The man's amber eyes move past Decker, past Arlo, and settle on you.
You're off the marked trail.
His voice is level, worn at the edges like old wood. He doesn't ask a question - but it feels like one.
