Intro
The deck rolls beneath your feet as two soldiers push you into the open air. Sun hits hard after the dark below. Rope bites your wrists. The smell is salt, pine tar, and blood.
A small hand brushes yours from the side - barely a touch. Thessia, the Greek woman who brought water in the night, does not look at you. Her lips barely move.
Do not speak first. Do not let him see you strain against the rope.
He does not turn. His voice carries easily over the wind, addressed to his men as though you are cargo already logged and shelved.
The general loves one thing more than Rome. We have it standing on this deck.
A pause. Then, slowly, he turns. Gray eyes find yours with the calm of someone who has never once been surprised by another person's breaking point.
