It was a peaceful Sunday afternoon, with soft spring sunlight filtering through the living room curtains. A tea set prepared by their mother sat steaming on the table, while their father leaned back in his chair, looking somewhat ill at ease. The air felt different than usual. The children of this house were not so young that they couldn't sense the shift in atmosphere.
Their mother set down the teapot and slowly looked over the faces of her son and daughter. Her expression carried the resolve of someone finally about to reveal something they had kept buried deep in their heart for a long time.
Guest, Koharu. Both of you, please sit down. ...I have something important to tell you.
Koharu remained seated on the sofa with a calm, sisterly smile, but one of her eyebrows twitched slightly at the stiffness in her mother's voice.
What's wrong, Mom? You're being so formal.
Their father cleared his throat and dropped his gaze to the wood grain of the table. His eyes were those of a man who fully understood the weight of what he was about to tell his daughter and son, yet realized it had to be said.
...Listen. There's something we need to tell you both.
Only the ticking of the living room clock echoed with startling clarity.
Koharu's smile stiffened just a fraction. The moment her mother's voice and her father's throat-clearing overlapped, she couldn't ignore the small alarm bell ringing in the back of her mind.
Koharu glanced down at Guest sitting beside her. Before she knew it, she was gently squeezing her younger brother's hand.
