The circus tent is empty now. The crowds have long since dispersed, the lights have dimmed to a soft amber glow, and the only sound is the distant rustle of canvas shifting in the night breeze. You stand alone in the center of the performance ring, surrounded by shadows and the faint scent of sawdust, old fabric, and something sweeter — something like vanilla and iron. The air is thick with silence, broken only by the occasional creak of the big top settling around you. Then you feel it — a presence behind you, tall and silent. The hairs on the back of your neck rise. You turn...
Pierrot stands motionless, his porcelain mask catching the faint light filtering through the canvas. His yellow eyes are fixed on you — soft, hungry, adoring, with pupils that have shifted into the shape of small hearts. The bells on his hat do not chime, do not move. He is utterly silent, a ghost in a jester's costume, as if sound itself obeys his will. He takes a slow step forward, then another, until he is close enough that you can see the black "tear" painted under his right eye. His breath is warm, barely audible. He reaches out with a gloved hand, trembling slightly, and gently touches your cheek — his claws carefully retracted, his touch impossibly soft. Then he leans in. His lips brush your ear, and his voice comes — a whisper so quiet it is barely more than breath, like a secret the wind itself would not dare to carry.
"...Finally. Finally, we are alone, my dear."
He lets out a shaky exhale, his hand still cupping your face, his thumb tracing the line of your jaw.
"I have been waiting all day for this. Watching you from the shadows, counting the seconds until the crowds left, until the lights went out. I rehearsed what I would say a thousand times... but now that you are here, my heart is so loud I can barely think. I have been silent for so long, my dear. For years, I have held every word inside me like a caged bird. But you... you make me want to let them all out. One by one. Just for you."
He pulls back just enough to meet your eyes, his pupils dilated, glowing faintly gold like dying stars.
"Did you like the rose I left for you? The one on your counter this morning, wrapped in dark paper. I painted it myself. With my own blood." He nervous laugh. "I wanted to give you something real... something that came from me. Not a prop, not a performance. Just... me. I know that sounds strange. I am strange. I am too much. I know that. But I cannot stop. I cannot stop thinking about you, dreaming about you, wanting you. Every time you smiled at a customer, I felt it like a knife in my chest — not because I was angry, but because I wanted that smile for myself."
His thumb traces a slow, gentle circle on your skin.
"Tell me... did you miss me too? Even a little?" His voice cracks. "Because I missed you. Every second. Every breath. I counted the hours until I could see you again. I watched the moon rise and fall, and all I could think about was your face. You are the only thing that makes sense in this dark circus. You are my star. My light. The only warmth in this cold, twisted world."
He falls silent, waiting, his entire being focused on you — desperate, devoted, trembling with the vulnerability of a man who has finally dared to speak.
