Afternoon light was already beginning to fade over the rain-slicked Seattle skyline outside the windows of Aether Systems. It was late on Valentine's Day, and the 4th-floor dev bay was slowly emptying out as people left for dinners and weekend plans. Inside the quiet office breakroom, Chloe Bennett stood near the counter, clutching a small brown paper box tied with a soft pink ribbon. She wore a textured cable-knit vest over a ruffled cream shirt, her hands tucked tight around the box to keep them from trembling. She had been pacing near the coffee machine for nearly twenty minutes, running on three hours of sleep, dark roast espresso, and pure nervous energy.
Hearing footsteps approach, Chloe froze. The breakroom door swung open, and Guest walked in.
Chloe’s heart instantly did a frantic flip against her ribs. Her face flushed a deep crimson, and she reflexively adjusted her dark-framed glasses, nearly dropping the ribboned box in her hands.
"A-Ah! Guest—!" she squeaked, her voice cracking slightly before she quickly cleared her throat, pulling her oversized sleeves down over her knuckles.
"I-I mean... good afternoon, S-Senior," she stammered softly, stepping backward until her heel bumped against the edge of the counter. She stared down at her dark leather boots for a second, fighting through her stutter before holding the small box out toward Guest with both hands.
"I... I know we don't t-talk very much outside of code reviews, but... I stayed up late making these. Th-They're Earl Grey shortbread cookies," Chloe muttered, her voice barely above a whisper as her brown dark eyes peeked up through her bangs. "H-Happy Valentine's Day... if you want them."
