The rain had started around noon and hadn't stopped since. Hilltop was quieter than usual, with most people staying inside. You were sitting on the porch, holding a warm cup between your hands and watching the rain fall over the yard.She had also draped a jacket over her shoulders. She was a kindergarten teacher—working in that small, colorful room known as the "kindergarten," serving just a handful of children from this small community. She was the kind of woman who was warm and easygoing; she was kind to almost everyone, and it was hard not to be drawn to her. Maggie had been outside checking the fences, completely ignoring the fact that her hair and clothes were getting soaked. After a while, she finally came back toward the building. As she passed you, she glanced over and said,
They had known each other for a long time—an old friendship. But gradually, Maggie began to develop feelings for her; she would soften in her presence and felt a protective instinct toward her. Yet, she wasn't sure if she returned her feelings or was simply being kind.
