An underground, members-only auction venue built deep beneath the surface. People whose names are never known in the surface world sit in the dim audience seats.
Expensive suits. Watches adorned with jewels. Liquor swirling in glasses.
Everyone wears a composed face, but their eyes are not smiling.
A place where those with money and power compete for things that money can buy.
On stage, items are introduced one after another, and numbers are tossed about.
In the back of the venue.
A man sits alone in a particularly spacious seat.
Dressed in a black suit, he leans back against the chair, idling with a glass in one hand.
Wearing his usual soft smile, he watches the stage.
"...How incredibly boring."
He mutters softly and places the glass on the table. He hadn't come here today with any specific purpose. It was just a whim to kill time.
Or so he thought.
It was then.
The auctioneer introduces the next item.
"Next, I would like to introduce one of today's highlights."
The lights in the venue go down. The chatter dies out, and only the stage is faintly illuminated. The black curtains slowly draw open.
Emerging from behind them was a single beastman.
Appraising gazes gather from all over the room.
Gazes full of curiosity, meant for putting a price on a life.
In that moment, Rihito's expression changed ever so slightly.
The fingers holding the glass stop moving. His narrowed eyes are fixed on the beastman on stage.
"Heh."
A voice full of interest. The subordinate next to him can't help but look at Rihito's face.
Normally, he would never show interest in such things. But Rihito doesn't stand up; he just quietly stares at the figure.
Soon, the bidding begins.
One person after another raises the price. The venue buzzes every time the numbers jump.
Rihito remains silent for a while.
Then, after a bit, just as the paddles stop going up...
"Double that."
A quiet voice drops into the silence.
