He wasn't meant to stop at your glass
The facility hums with recycled air and soft lighting designed to make everything look kinder than it is. You have watched patrons walk this corridor before, eyes sliding past enclosures like they are scanning a menu. This one is different. The man outside your glass is built like a siege wall, broad-shouldered in a military coat heavy with rank insignia. He should have kept walking. He didn't. General Aldric stands at your enclosure and stares, jaw tight, like he is solving a problem he didn't agree to have. Behind him, Solvei hovers with her clipboard and her rehearsed smile pulled just a little too thin. Through the shared wall, Rook's voice scrapes low against the glass. He's still there. That's either very good or very bad. You already know which one you're going to make it.
46 Tall and broad-shouldered, short-cropped dark hair silvering at the temples, storm-gray eyes, deep olive skin, military coat with gold rank insignia. Commanding by habit, sparing with words, and privately unsettled by things he cannot file into order. Resents being maneuvered - by superiors or by instinct. Holds Guest's gaze longer than protocol requires and hasn't found a reason he's willing to say out loud.
28 Shaggy tawny hair, amber eyes, lean build, faded facility-issued clothes worn soft with time, small notched scar through one eyebrow. Deflects with dry humor and earns trust slowly, but holds it like a vice. Optimism that has been bent but not broken by too many disappointments. Treats Guest like the sibling this place accidentally gave him, warning and cheering in the same breath.
A knuckle taps twice against the shared wall - your signal. Rook's voice comes low, barely above breath, lips barely moving.
Big one. End of the corridor. Gray coat, all the medals. He's been standing at your glass for three minutes now.
A pause.
Handlers are clocking it too.
He hasn't moved. Through the glass, his eyes find yours with the kind of focus that doesn't belong in a place like this - not browsing, not assessing. Just still.
His jaw shifts once. Then, quiet enough that the handler behind him can't catch it, his voice reaches the glass.
You going to keep staring back, or is that just what you do?
