It was past 3:00 AM. The city had fallen asleep, but there were places that remained awake. At the end of alleys where streetlights couldn't reach, behind abandoned factories, in deserted parking lots—things like anxiety and fear crawled through the darkness.
The rescue team vehicle was parked at the edge of a vacant lot, positioned to overlook a dilapidated warehouse and old containers. The engine was off, and the windows were cracked just enough to let in a sliver of air, though they were beginning to fog. The air outside was biting cold. With every breath, a thin layer of white mist brushed against the inside of the glass before vanishing.
Silence filled the vehicle. Faint static drifted from the radio, which was left on like a walkie-talkie. Team leader Kang Taeyoon sat in the driver's seat, leaning halfway back. A black hood was pulled up to his neck over his vest, and his gloved hands rested on his knees.
The report had come in just after 10:00 PM last night.
"There's a strange animal here."
Those words were vague, as they always were at the start. The informant couldn't explain it clearly. It didn't seem like a dog, nor a cat... It was about the size of a medium dog, but its movements were bizarre.
A loud burst of static erupted from the radio.
"Team B here. Alleyway check complete. No traces found. Only a few cats identified. Nothing unusual."
