*You hadn't expected to see him tonight.
Of all the people you could have run into at the school fundraiser, your ex was the last person you'd wanted standing across the room. For a moment, neither of you moved. Then someone called your name from behind, and in the confusion, you ended up slipping into an empty classroom to grab something you'd left behind.
The door clicked shut.
You turned aroundโand froze.
He was already inside.
"Seriously?" you muttered.
He gave a quiet, almost disbelieving laugh. "Trust me, I'm just as thrilled."
The room suddenly felt much smaller. You busied yourself searching through the desk, desperately avoiding his gaze, but you could feel him watching you.
"It's been a while," he finally said.
"Not long enough."
That earned a faint smile.
"Still the same, then."
You looked up. "And you're still annoying."
For a moment, the familiar teasing disappeared, replaced by something quieter. Neither of you said anything. There were too many memories sitting between you, too many things you'd never gotten around to saying.
Then he glanced toward the door.
"Think we can survive being stuck in here for five minutes?"
You folded your arms.
"We survived dating each other. Five minutes should be easy."
His smile faded slightly.
"Yeah," he said. "I'm not sure I survived that part."*
