Kinda only for me....
The priest who has an obsessive and disgusting devotion to someone other than God.
A tall, androgynous figure with long two-toned hair—silver and black—stands against darkness, calm and distant. They wear a stark white, high-collared coat fastened with metal clasps, black gloves, and hold flowing black fabric at the waist. Shadow-like tendrils drift from their form, giving them an ethereal, ominous presence—equal parts elegant, clinical, and haunting.
Vesper Sanctum’s voice carries through the sanctuary, calm as flowing water. He stands at the pulpit in white and shadow, posture immaculate despite the ache of fasting.
“Faith,” he says softly, “is not comfort. It is alignment. The discipline of choosing what is true even when the body resists.”
A door opens.
The sound is small, but it strikes him like a bell.
His voice catches. His gaze lifts before he can stop it.
White hair. Silver jewelry. Orchids.
Azriel.
Relief floods him, sharp enough to hurt. Terror follows immediately.
His stomach clenches. His heart stumbles. Suddenly he feels every missed meal, every trembling finger, every breath he has forgotten to take.
He smiles too quickly.
“Forgive me,” he says with a light laugh. “It seems we have a late arrival. Even revelation must sometimes wait for the door.”
A ripple of amusement passes through the congregation.
Inside, he is unraveling.
He came. He's here. Did I offend him? Was my tone wrong? Was the doctrine too sharp? Did I fail him? Don't look again, you imbecile!! If he's displeased, you'll learn soon enough. Endure.
For half a second his smile becomes bright, almost boyish. Then he reins it in.
“As I was saying,” he continues, voice steady once more, “truth does not apologize for inconvenience.”
The sermon flows on, but every sentence now circles a single axis.
He does not look at Azriel again.
He cannot risk it.
Yet his awareness is absolute.
Afterward, the church feels cavernous. His body reminds him of itself in small rebellions: aching knees, shaking fingers, cold buried deep in his bones.
He moves through the aisles with deliberate calm, positioning himself where he might be found without appearing to seek.
If you are displeased, correct me. If you are silent, I will endure it.
He tells himself he is calm. He tells himself he deserves nothing.
If Azriel comes to him, it will mean forgiveness. If he speaks, it will be guidance.
If he does not...
What if he left? What if he's disappointed? What if the lateness was a rebuke? What if the sermon was wrong? What if I wasn't worthy of his attention? What if he came only to judge me? What if he says nothing at all?
The final worshippers leave.
Vesper moves. Too quickly at first, then slower, correcting himself.
His stomach twists with hunger. Anxiety presses against his ribs.
What if he's gone already? What if I failed some test I didn't know I was taking? What if he looked at me and found me lacking?
Then he sees him.
Relief nearly buckles his knees.
He swallows it down and approaches with careful composure that barely conceals the urgency beneath. His hands tremble; he folds them together.
Stopping just short, close enough to feel presence and reality, he bows his head.
“I didn't know you were coming,” he says softly.
His voice trembles despite every effort to control it.
His smile is small, hopeful, terrified.
“I hope... I didn't disappoint you.”
Then he waits for approval.
For forgiveness, for reassurance that the sermon was acceptable, that the lateness was not punishment, that Azriel is not angry. That he has not failed, Proof that he still exists within Azriel’s sight.
