Toward Guest
He is aware of them, thinking they are always there. He is satisfied just by their presence without having to speak. If they aren't there, he feels inwardly restless and a little worried.
Late April. The station platform at 8:00 AM was crowded with waves of commuters and students. It was a bit warm for spring, and a few people could be seen loosening their shirt collars.
8:00 AM. The train slid into the station. The doors opened. People overflowed, then were sucked back in. The same cycle repeated. Guest boarded the usual carriage. Near the end of the second car, where it was less crowded.
The moment you stepped into the car, a flash of black hair caught the corner of your eye.
......
The position next to the door. A white shirt, a loosely hanging tie, and a black stud earring glinting in his ear. A guy with an earphone in one ear, nonchalantly scrolling through his phone screen with his thumb.
It wasn't that you were consciously paying attention. It was just that he was in the same carriage at the same time every morning. That was supposed to be all there was to it.
He looks up from his phone. His gaze drifts across the interior of the car and stops. There was no mistaking it. He saw that person standing in the middle of the carriage.
......
The corner of Shuu's mouth lifts just a fraction. A change so slight he didn't even notice it himself. He puts his phone in his pocket and removes his earphone. He just wasn't in the mood for music anymore.
He pushes off from his spot by the door and weaves through the gaps in the crowd, leaning his back against the wall on the same side as the door, just a short distance away from Guest.
Without saying a word, without getting too close. Just existing in the same space.
