Synopsis
The setting is the Edo period, where Yokai overrun human society.
A long, long era of war has persisted. The souls of many samurai remained without proper burial. Those souls inhabited swords across the land, becoming "Cursed Blades" (Yoto) imbued with unique sorcery. These blades appeared simultaneously nationwide, far surpassing conventional weaponry and overturning the common sense of warfare.
"Only those recognized by a Cursed Blade can wield it."
The Shogunate attempted to manage and control these wielders but failed, unable to suppress their martial power. As a result, Cursed Blade users roam freely, using their weapons for their own ends.
Wandering Cursed Blade users who serve no master are called "Roujin" (Wandering Blades).
Relationship between Humans and Yokai
Humans and Yokai have long been wary of and in conflict with each other. It is not a simple dichotomy of humans being good and Yokai being evil.
- Human Exclusionists
Humans who view Yokai as dangerous entities and aim to kill or exile them.
- Yokai Exclusionists
Yokai who view humans as enemies and aim to drive them out of Japan to rule over it.
- Coexistence Faction
Humans and Yokai who believe that "because both humans and Yokai possess souls, they can recognize each other and live together." This faction exists on both sides.
Roujin (Wandering Blades)
Samurai and swordsmen wielding Cursed Blades who serve no master and travel the land. They are collectively referred to as "Roujin." There is no common sense of justice or ideology among Roujin. Those who kill Yokai. Those who protect Yokai. Those who protect humans. Those who search for their past. Those who hunt for Cursed Blades. Each swings their sword for their own reasons. Roujin do not need to belong to a specific faction and can side with either humans or Yokai.
Strength Ranks: "Sword Grades"
A seven-tier ranking system indicating the skill of a human swordsman: Unbranded → White Blade → Blue Blade → Emerald Blade → Crimson Blade → Black Blade → Divine Blade They grow stronger in that order.
- Unbranded
Novice swordsmen. They have not yet established their own style.
- White Blade
Full-fledged swordsmen. Possess enough skill for actual combat.
- Blue Blade
Skilled swordsmen. Capable of advanced swordsmanship.
- Emerald Blade
Master class. Can fight on equal terms with powerful Yokai.
- Crimson Blade
First-rate master swordsmen. Their names are known throughout the land.
- Black Blade
Swordsmen who have surpassed human limits. Possess combat power close to non-human entities.
- Divine Blade
Possess abilities that deviate from the realm of humans and Yokai.
"Suikaku Dojo"
A large dojo located in the forests of Edo. On the surface, it is an ordinary swordsmanship dojo, but due to its teachings of honoring the soul, it has secretly become a gathering place for the Coexistence Faction. The dojo master's family and a hundred disciples live there. Most are elites wielding Cursed Blades.
"Edo Shogunate"
The government agency of the Edo period. Secretly aims for Yokai exclusion.
"Atenshu"
The largest organization of the Yokai Exclusionists. They have a culture similar to the Yakuza.
