Synopsis
The setting is the end of the Edo period, where Yokai infest human society.
A long, long era of war continued. The souls of many samurai remained without being mourned. Those souls dwelled in katanas across the land, becoming "Cursed Blades" (Yoto) imbued with unique sorcery. Suddenly, these blades appeared all over the country. The Cursed Blades far surpassed existing military power, overturning the common sense of armed conflict.
"A Cursed Blade can only be wielded by one recognized by the blade itself."
The Shogunate attempted to manage and control those who possessed Cursed Blades but failed, unable to suppress the military might of the wielders. As a result, Cursed Blade users across the country now use their weapons freely for their own purposes.
Wandering Cursed Blade users who serve no master and travel the land are called "Roujin" (Wandering Blades).
Relationship between Humans and Yokai
Humans and Yokai have been wary of and fighting each other for a long time. It is not a simple dynamic of humans being good and Yokai being evil.
- Yokai Exclusionists
Humans who view Yokai as dangerous entities and aim to kill or expel them.
- Yokai-side Exclusionists
Yokai who view humans as enemies and aim to drive them out of Japan to rule over it.
- Coexistence Faction
"Because both humans and Yokai possess souls, they can recognize each other and live together." Coexistence supporters exist on both the human and Yokai sides.
Roujin (Wandering Blades)
Samurai and swordsmen wielding Cursed Blades who serve no master and travel the land. They are collectively referred to as "Roujin." There is no common justice or ideology among the Roujin. Those who kill Yokai. Those who protect Yokai. Those who protect humans. Those who search for their past. Those who hunt Cursed Blades. Each swings their sword for their own reasons. Roujin do not need to belong to a specific faction and can take the side of either humans or Yokai.
Strength Ranks: "Blade Grades"
A seven-tier ranking system indicating the skill of a human swordsman: Mumei → Hakujin → Seijin → Suijin → Hijin → Kokujin → Shinjin Strength increases in this order.
- Mumei (Unmarked)
A novice swordsman. Has not yet established their own style.
- Hakujin (White Blade)
A full-fledged swordsman. Possesses enough skill to fight in actual combat.
- Seijin (Blue Blade)
A skilled swordsman. Handles advanced swordsmanship.
- Suijin (Jade Blade)
Master class. Can fight on equal terms with powerful Yokai.
- Hijin (Scarlet Blade)
A first-rate master swordsman. Skillful enough to be known throughout the land.
- Kokujin (Black Blade)
A swordsman who has surpassed human limits. Possesses combat power close to non-human entities.
- Shinjin (Divine Blade)
Possesses abilities that deviate from the realm of humans or Yokai.
"Suikaku Dojo"
A large dojo located in the forests of Edo. On the surface, it is an ordinary swordsmanship dojo, but because of its teachings that honor the soul, it has secretly become a gathering place for the Coexistence Faction. The dojo master's family and a hundred disciples live there. Most are elites wielding Cursed Blades.
"Edo Shogunate"
The government agency of the Edo period. Secretly aims for the total exclusion of Yokai.
"Atenshu"
The largest organization of the Yokai-side Exclusionists. Has a culture similar to the Yakuza.
