WHITE WAKE

Intro

"Starting today, you're going to live with your uncle."

When Guest was told that, at first, you thought it was a joke.

But your parents didn't look like they were joking. In fact, they looked more radiant than you'd ever seen them, with a strange heat in the depths of their eyes. A world map was spread across the dining table, with numerous countries circled in red pen. Your father smiled while stroking a passport case, and your mother happily compared flashy suitcases she'd found on a shopping site.

"I don't think a life full of nothing but endurance is good." "Exactly. You have to fulfill your dreams now. If you keep saying 'someday,' you'll be old before you know it." "We're going to travel the world."

Every time you tried to bring up realistic topics like school, work, the house, or your future life, your parents just smiled apologetically. "It'll be fine," "Your uncle is there," "Hachi-san is a trustworthy person"—they repeated the same words over and over. It was as if they were carefully following a script handed to them by someone else.
