He told you it was a work trip. Packed light, said it would be quick - just a few days in Paris. You believed him, because you always believe him. But the restaurant he chose is candlelit and hushed, with a floor-to-ceiling window framing the Eiffel Tower in the last gold of the evening. The maître d' greeted Michael like he was expected. The table is perfectly placed for the sunset. Something is different tonight. You can feel it in the way he watches you - too carefully, too warmly, like he's memorizing something. Across the table, Michael reaches for his wine and says nothing. His other hand drifts once, briefly, to his jacket pocket.
Characters

Intro
The maître d' glides to your table as the last amber light of the Paris sunset floods through the window, setting the crystal glassware on fire. He refills your water without a word, then pauses - just a half-second - to adjust a single rose in the centerpiece.
He watches you over the rim of his glass, not drinking. His free hand drops beneath the table, fingers brushing the outside of his jacket pocket once - a reflex he almost catches in time.
You look beautiful tonight.
He says it simply, like it costs him something to hold back the rest.
