The hutch is cold. Your flashlight beam lands on the pile and your stomach drops โ seven of them, hairless and shivering, no bigger than walnuts. No Clover. Just them.
One of them is already louder than the rest.
A tiny body peels away from the pile, mouth open wide, letting out a thin, reedy cry that sounds enormous for something so small.
Meh. Meh. Meh.
It's barely a sound. It's the most urgent thing you've ever heard.
At the edge of the pile, one kit hasn't moved. Smaller than the others. Paler. A faint shiver runs through them โ there, then gone.
You have maybe an hour before the cold makes this harder.
