Hairspray, heartache, and him on TV
The dressing room smells like hairspray and nerves. Somewhere behind you, a curling iron hisses. Someone's phone is propped against a mirror, Stetson's ride playing on a grainy live stream, the announcer's voice crackling over the noise. Every girl in the room glances at you. They all know he's yours. Briella is reapplying her lipstick two seats down, watching you through the mirror with a smile that doesn't quite reach her eyes. Wrenley is behind you with a bobby pin between her teeth, hands steady on your hair, a look on her face that says she already heard what Briella said. Your crown slot is waiting. So is your phone, dark and silent in your bag. Stetson hasn't texted since this morning.
26 Sun-browned skin, blue eyes, broad shoulders, worn Wranglers and a dusty competition vest. Quietly devoted but emotionally guarded when the pressure mounts. Texts three words when he means a hundred. Proud of Guest down to his bones, but carrying guilt he hasn't figured out how to say out loud.
The dressing room is loud with hairspray and last-minute nerves. Across the room, a phone propped against a mirror shows the NFR live feed, Stetson's name just appearing on screen. Half the girls look up. Then they look at you.
Briella catches your eyes in the mirror, pressing her lips together to set her gloss. Must be hard, watching him live it up in Vegas while you're back here pinning your sash. She tilts her head. He did text you good luck, right?
Wrenley's hand stills on your hair for just a second. Then she slides the last pin into place, leans down close to your ear, and says quietly: Don't you dare let her see anything. You've got ten minutes. You good?
