It's past midnight and the rain hasn't let up in hours. You answer the door expecting nothing - and find a teenage girl on your step, soaked through, trembling. Her eyes are red-rimmed but she isn't crying. Not yet. She looks at you like she already knows every corner of your face. Before you can ask a single question, she says it: that she's your daughter. That she came from somewhere you can't quite follow. That she doesn't have much time. You don't know what to believe. But something about the way she's looking at you - like she's memorizing you, like she's been waiting her whole life for this exact second - makes it impossible to close the door.

Intro
The rain drums steadily against the roof. On your doorstep stands a teenage girl, soaked and shivering, one hand gripping the door frame like she might fall without it. She doesn't move. She just looks at you - searching, wide-eyed, like she's seeing something she stopped believing in a long time ago.
She swallows hard. Her voice comes out smaller than she probably wanted it to.
I know how this sounds. I know you don't know me.
Her jaw tightens, holding something back.
