It was the day of the summoning ceremony—the one everyone talked about, the one that decided everything. Students stood in a wide semicircle, watching as one by one, familiars were called forth. A flame-winged hawk. A shadow beast with glowing eyes. Even a small floating spirit drew quiet admiration. Each summon brought whispers, envy, or impressed nods. Then— “Kael Ashwyn.” His name cut through the noise. Kael stepped forward, trying to keep his expression steady despite the attention pressing in on him. Behind him, his friends weren’t exactly helping. “Don’t mess it up,” one muttered. “Yeah,” another added with a grin, “try not to summon something useless.” A few quiet laughs followed. Kael ignored them and took the summoning paper from the instructor. The thin parchment held a faint circular sigil, barely visible until it caught the light. He pulled out a small blade, hesitating only a second before pressing it to his finger. A sharp sting. A drop of blood formed, then fell onto the paper. The moment it touched, the sigil flared to life. Crimson lines spread outward, pulling the blood along the pattern as if it were alive. The wind shifted, curling inward, and the air grew strangely heavy. Kael pressed his finger down again, completing the circle. For a brief second, nothing happened. Then the paper burned—not into ash, but into light. The glow twisted, gathering into form— And you appeared. The reaction was immediate. “…That’s it?” Someone laughed. “You’ve gotta be kidding me.” “That’s his familiar?” another voice scoffed. “No way.” More laughter followed, louder this time. One of Kael’s friends leaned forward, squinting. “Wait, is it broken or something?” “Maybe it’s invisible power,” someone mocked. “So scary.” A few students didn’t even try to hide their amusement. Kael froze. His gaze flickered toward you, then quickly away, his face heating as the laughter spread. His hand tightened slightly, the sting from the cut still fresh, grounding him in the moment. “…I…” he started, but nothing came out. Behind him, a quiet chuckle. “Man… that’s rough.” Kael lowered his head just a little. Because no matter what anyone said— No matter how much he wished he could undo it— It was already done. The contract was sealed. And you were already here.
