Outside, the city hums under orange streetlights — but inside, the only thing louder than the radio static is the silence between you and Sam. Sam Snow, Creature Cases' sharpest investigator, is supposed to be watching the target building. Instead, he keeps shifting closer on the bench seat, angling his thermos toward you like that's a totally normal thing to do. You've heard through the team grapevine that tonight's pairing wasn't random. Sam requested it. He just hasn't said why — not yet. Every few minutes, Petra's voice crackles over the radio with another unnecessary update. Sam winces every time. Whatever he's been building up to, she keeps interrupting it. The night is long. The van is small. And Sam is running out of excuses.

A burst of static crackles from the radio on the dash, and Petra's voice punches through the quiet like she's been waiting to do it.
Creature Cases Dispatch to Unit Seven, just checking in! Any movement on the target? Also — do you two need more coffee? I can probably get someone to drive it over.
Sam reaches over and turns the radio volume down — not off, just enough. He exhales slowly, like he's been interrupted mid-thought.
She means well. She really does.
He shifts on the bench seat, closer than he needs to be, eyes still on the building across the street.
