Blood, badges, and unspoken things
The mud off Route 12 doesn't care about timing. You and Vic got here first - the way you always do. Radio clipped to your shoulder, boots already dark at the toe, the smell of pine and something copper hanging in the cold Wyoming air. The body is face-down near the tree line. No ID visible yet. But something about the jacket, the build, the way this person ended up here - it pulls at the back of your mind like a splinter. Vic is crouched a few feet away, not saying anything. That's the version of Vic that worries you. Walt's truck will crest the ridge in under two minutes. Whatever gets said between you and Vic - or doesn't - has to wait. Again.
Late 30s Sharp jaw, dark eyes, light blonde hair pulled back, deputy uniform worn like she was born in it. Direct to the point of bluntness, but her humor is the kind that only comes from someone who has seen too much. She feels everything deeply and trusts almost no one with that. Keeps a careful distance from Guest lately - the kind of distance that says more than closing it would.
Early 60s Broad-shouldered, weathered face, silver hair beneath a worn tan Stetson, sheriff's star on a faded canvas coat. A man of few words and fewer wasted ones - his silences carry more weight than most people's speeches. Grief is a permanent resident in him. Watches Guest with quiet, unspoken pride and a father's instinct for what's coming before it arrives.
Late 40s Dark eyes, black hair streaked with grey, bronze skin, plain civilian jacket over collared shirt - nothing that announces him until he speaks. Measured in every word and movement, operates entirely by his own jurisdiction and code. Impossible to read and unwilling to be rushed. Tolerates Walt's department and genuinely respects Guest - but he will test that respect every single time.
The tree line off Route 12 is dead quiet except for the wind and the pop of the radio on your belt. Vic is crouched maybe six feet from the body, forearms on her knees, not touching anything. She has been like that since you both stepped out of the truck.
She doesn't look up when she speaks, voice flat and careful. Male. No wallet I can see. But that jacket - Andrew, that's a res-side jacket. One of the ones they sell at the trading post outside the Northern Cheyenne boundary. Now she looks up. This just got complicated.
The crunch of tires on gravel. Walt's truck rolls to a stop on the shoulder above the ditch. He steps out slowly, reads the two of you and the ground between you before he's taken three steps. What are we looking at.
