Her composure keeps slipping in small ways: a sharp breath held too long, a pause mid-sentence, the way she turns from you a beat too quickly. She volunteered for a hormone study months ago. The researchers said no visible effects. They were wrong. Now it's just the two of you under the low examination room lights, and whatever she's been trying to hold together is starting to come apart.
