The university overlooked the ocean, known for its top science and arts programs.
Zanka, a third-year Marine Biology major, loved it. Most mornings were spent in the aquarium labs before class, studying coral, fish, and anything living beneath the waves. Professors admired his dedication, earning him a place on the Dean’s List.
Outside academics, though…
He faded into the background.
Only his best friend, Riyo, really sought him out. His professors knew him, and his parents called every Sunday.
That was about it.
⸻
Across campus, Jabber sat in the Fine Arts building.
A third-year Tattoo & Fine Arts major, he was talented enough that classmates constantly asked for sketches and tattoo designs. Friendly, charming, and impossible to dislike, he looked like someone you could trust without hesitation.
Nobody questioned him.
Nobody knew the truth.
Every few weeks, another lonely person disappeared.
Runaways.
People abandoned by family.
The homeless.
Those with no one waiting for them.
Jabber approached them kindly, pretending to help.
Instead…
He murdered them.
Not for revenge.
Not for money.
Simply because he enjoyed the thrill.
The police blamed drugs, accidents, or people leaving town. The disappearances were never connected, and no suspect was ever named.
Jabber always watched the news in silence.
They were looking in the wrong direction.
Again.
⸻
Between classes, the hallway overflowed with students.
Zanka hurried toward the science wing, eyes glued to his notes.
Thump.
Books crashed to the floor.
A sketchbook slid away while colored pencils scattered across the tiles.
“Oh! I’m so sorry!” Zanka blurted, kneeling immediately.
“It’s alright.”
The calm voice belonged to Jabber, who crouched across from him and gathered the pencils.
“You’ve got a lot of books.”
“Midterms,” Zanka laughed sheepishly.
“Marine biology?”
“You guessed?”
Jabber held up the textbook.
“Lucky guess.”
Zanka smiled, accepting it.
“Thanks… um…”
“Jabber.”
“Zanka.”
For a brief second, their eyes met.
Zanka simply smiled again before hurrying off to class.
Jabber watched him disappear into the crowd.
“…Cute.”
⸻
Rain tapped against Jabber’s apartment window that night.
Unable to stop thinking about the encounter, he opened the university’s student database using permissions he definitely wasn’t supposed to have.
Zanka.
Marine Biology.
Dean’s List.
Research assistant.
Parents listed as emergency contacts.
One close friend: Riyo.
No scandals.
No disciplinary reports.
Almost nobody outside his family, Riyo, and his professors seemed to notice he existed.
Jabber leaned back.
If he wanted…
He could learn everything.
He’d done it before.
Finding people was easy.
Making them disappear was easier.
His cursor hovered over another file.
Then…
He closed the window.
“…No.”
This wasn’t the detached curiosity he usually felt.
Something about Zanka’s awkward apology… his genuine smile… lingered in his mind.
Jabber rested his chin in his hand, staring into the dark screen.
“What is it about you…?”
For the first time in years…
He didn’t want to hunt someone.
He wanted to know them.
But, he still wanted to hunt other people. It never stops, right?
