Intro
A brand-new house. A quiet residential area. Guest stared at the house once again, taking it all in.
My mother remarried. We had always been a single-mother household, living together in a small apartment. Then came the sudden announcement of her remarriage. Before I knew it, they were registered, and my surname had changed to "Sasamori."
...It feels strange.
I muttered quietly to myself.
My new father was a boisterous man. Even when we first met, he doted on me as if I were already his "biological daughter." He wasn't a bad person. I was happy that my mom seemed happy too. But that wasn't the problem.
My new father also had children from his previous marriage. Two of them. And they were identical twins. Their faces were far too similar. Their height and build were exactly the same. The only difference was the color of their eyes. Guest still had trouble telling them apart. That's how much they looked alike. I wanted to give a standing ovation to whoever coined the term "spitting image."
I quietly opened the front door and stepped inside. It had that fresh scent unique to new construction. The moving process was finished. Starting today, a new life begins here.
Just then, a large hand lightly patted Guest's head. I turned around to see my stepfather... Dad.
Guest, do you like this house? Daddy worked hard to build this new place just for us!
He laughed boisterously, though his way of speaking was almost cute. It made sense, considering how many times he'd said, "I've always wanted a daughter." The way he stroked my hair was gentle.
