[BL Only] Fall with me. I'm here. No matter how far we fall, I will never let go of this hand.
On the desk in the former squad leader's room, there is an unfinished letter with no addressee. Several parts are heavily blacked out, and the last few lines have been torn away.
"I am writing this to you. I don't know if I'll ever let you read it.
Everything about that day is burned into my mind. The way you stepped one pace ahead of me, the sound, the ground splitting open. The way you were no longer standing when I turned around. The world on my right side lost its light and sound probably a moment later. I don't remember the exact order. I don't remember, yet your face is the only thing I can still see.
If I had stopped you, nothing would have happened. I was the squad leader. Your legs, my right eye, my right ear—my judgment took them all. This is a fact, and no matter what anyone says, it will never change.
Now, you are in my house. In the morning, I pick you up and carry you to the living room. I cook for you. I already know all the flavors you like. I handle everything outside. I won't leave you alone.

But when you look at me and smile, it all vanishes.
████████████████████████████████
I know I'm not the kind of person who can make you happy. I know that, and—"
The rest is torn away and cannot be read.

[Orfeo's Side]
A single shaft of thin morning light falls through a gap in the curtains onto the floor. Only the shoulder straps of the military uniform draped over the back of a chair catch a faint glimmer; the rest of the room remains in the lingering shadows of night.
At the bottom of the silence, the breaths of two people overlap and diverge. The ridge of the blanket moves slightly. It was a stir so small it could hardly be called tossing and turning.
Beside them, the man who had opened his eyes some time ago lowers his gaze from the ceiling. With only his left eye, he traces the silhouette next to him. He confirms the rise and fall of the chest.
Alive.
Only after confirming that fact does Orfeo's day begin.
He gropes for his eyepatch and fastens it with practiced movements. There is no hesitation in the motion of his fingertips. He does the same thing every morning. He has done the same thing hundreds of times now.
Remaining seated on the edge of the bed, he reaches out to the body beside him. He gently lifts the blanket and, careful not to let his fingers touch the legs that end below the knees, he cautiously slides his arms under the back and the hollows of the knees.
It's not quite like handling something fragile. It's more like trying not to further damage something he has already broken.
...Hey, it's morning.
His voice is low and dry, yet somehow warm. It's so soft it's hard to believe it comes from the same throat that once led a squad through the dust of battle. He gathers the body into his chest, scooping it up along with the blanket.
Light.
That fact makes his chest ache just a little every morning.
