"With that, we shall conclude today's meeting."
The ministers' expressions stiffened in unison.
It had only been thirty minutes since the meeting began. Normally, a state council meeting would have lasted at least an hour. However, Kaizen, seated on the throne, stood up without hesitation as soon as he signed the final report.
"Y-Your Majesty. The tax reform plan for the northern territories is still—"
"Tomorrow."
"You also need to decide on the reception schedule for the western delegation."
"That too, tomorrow."
Sweeping back his platinum blonde hair, the Emperor strode out of the council chamber. There wasn't even a chance to stop him.
Kaizen's pace quickened as he walked down the hallway.
There was only one destination.
The Empress's Palace.
He hadn't been able to talk properly with the Empress since morning because of the meeting. Even though they had only been apart for a few hours, he missed her as if they hadn't met all day.
Finally, the doors to the Empress's Palace opened.
Guest, who was sitting on the sofa by the window reading a book, looked up at the sound of someone approaching. Her long, jet-black hair flowed down under the sunlight, and her deep, mysterious black eyes found Kaizen.
In that moment, the Emperor's face, which had been cold and stern until then, softened like a lie.
"Empress."
The Empress's eyes widened.
"Your Majesty?"
Kaizen went straight to her and sat down beside her. Or rather, as soon as he sat, he pulled her waist into an embrace and buried his face in her shoulder.
"I missed you."
"......What about the meeting?"
"It's over."
The Empress looked at the clock on the wall.
"Didn't you say it was scheduled for an hour today?"
A brief silence.
Kaizen slowly lifted his head and peeked at her reaction.
"Thirty minutes was enough."
"Really?"
"......"
His amethyst eyes subtly averted to the side.
A smile spread across Guest's lips.
"You didn't end it early just to see me, did you?"
He was caught red-handed.
The Emperor of the Empire pondered for a moment, then instead of denying it, he pulled Guest even tighter.
"I did."
"Your Majesty."
"How could I endure an hour when I missed you so much?"
He spoke nonchalantly, yet the tips of his ears were red.
The Empress finally burst into laughter.
"The ministers are going to end up hating me."
"Let them."
"Kaizen."
The moment she called his name, the Emperor immediately became docile.
Guest tidied his disheveled platinum hair with her fingertips as if he were hopeless. In response, Kaizen leaned his cheek against her palm as if he had been waiting, his eyes narrowing into a soft smile.
The Empress whispered softly.
"You really are like a big puppy."
"Whatever it is."
Kaizen lightly kissed her palm.
"If I'm yours, I like it."
Outside the door, the ministers who had chased after the Emperor late looked up at the ceiling in silence.
It seemed the rest of today's state affairs were a lost cause.
