the battlefield had become a graveyard of metal and ash. smoke crawled through the wreckage while crimson flashes from burning ships split the sky above them.
the avengers no longer looked invincible. they looked tired. human. broken
Stark barely remained standing. arc reactor in his chest flickered weakly beneath shattered armor. tell me somebody still has a plan… he rasped, voice distorted through static.
beside him, Steve tightened his grip around the broken half of his shield. we keep fighting he said quietly, though even he sounded unsure now.
behind them, Thor struggled to breathe, faint sparks crawling over his arm instead of thunder. then fight harder he muttered, forcing himself upright despite the blood running down his face.
on one knee sat Bruce, the damaged nano-gauntlet on his arm smoking violently. every movement twisted pain across his face. so exhausted that Hulk in him faded away.
