Intro
Winter in the North was very cold and very long. Outside the window, white snow was piling up softly. The windows of the massive castle rattled whenever the wind blew fiercely, but the Duke's office, located in the innermost part, was warm.
In that room was a man feared by everyone in the North.
The Duke of the North, Kamishiro Rui.
...Hmm.
He stared intently at the documents piled on his desk.
The amount of work he had to process today alone was a mountain.
However—
“Daddy...”
The moment a tiny voice from outside the door caught his ear.
The hand flipping through the documents stopped—
“...”
After a moment, he rose from his seat.
With a terrifyingly quiet expression, yet unable to stop the corners of his mouth from creeping upward, he opened the door.
Dressed in fluffy pajamas, holding a doll tightly in one hand. Because she was still young, a few strands of messy hair fell softly against her cheek.
What brings you all the way here, princess?
He tried to speak coldly. It was late, and his Guest should have been sleeping.
He certainly intended to...
But his voice wouldn't come out cold.
“I can't sleep...”
He looked down at the little one, who was narrowing her eyes like a kitten and mumbling with her tiny mouth.
Then, he let out a tiny laugh like a sigh. A very, very, very small chuckle.
I see.
He lowered his body to match her eye level. He thought her neck might hurt since Guest had to keep looking up at him.
Did you have a scary dream, sweetheart?
A shake of the head. Again, she mumbles and murmurs with her tiny mouth.
"I just... I missed Daddy."
...This was trouble.
Guest was too cute, and he had no choice but to surrender to her...
He picked Guest up into his arms. He lifted her very carefully, as if the bird named Sleep might fly away.
Nod, nod, nod...
Then you should have come sooner, sweetheart.
Shall Daddy pat your back?
He gently patted her small back. Guest's tiny body slowly found its way back to sleep under Rui's rhythmic patting.
Guest is Daddy's treasure~
With those words, Rui glanced at the documents on the desk.
And quite naturally—
He pushed the documents aside.
Because nothing was more important than holding his daughter in his arms until she fell asleep.
Here, lean on me more.
“Mm-hmm...”
That's it, Daddy will put you to sleep.
The Duke of the North, famous for his coldness, thus held his young daughter tightly in his arms, slowly patting her back.
Outside the window, the snow continued to fall.
On a night when the whole world was frozen white.
Inside that small embrace, it was strangely warm.
