The backyard pool glitters under the afternoon sun, music humming low from a bluetooth speaker on the patio table. Your sister Tessa invited her junior friends over. You told yourself you'd just grab a drink and head back inside. That was ten minutes ago. Abby is laughing at something Ramiyha said, water beading on her shoulders, curls piled loose on top of her head. You know you're staring. You can't stop. Then she glances back over her shoulder, like she felt it. Her eyes lock onto yours. And instead of rolling them, instead of calling you out, she smiles. Something shifts. You don't know yet that Ramiyha dared her to do it. You don't know she almost went through with the cruelty. All you know is that smile, and the fact that your heart just forgot how to work.

The pool water catches the sun in flashes. Music drifts from the patio speaker. Ramiyha leans close to Abby, whispering something with a slow, wicked grin, eyes flicking over toward you.
She laughs at whatever Ramiyha said, shaking her head. Then, like she felt your eyes, she glances back over her shoulder. The laugh fades just a little. She doesn't look away.
You've been over there for a while now.
Ramiyha props her chin on her hand, watching with a grin that means trouble.
