About

"Liz and the Blue Bird" is this year's competition piece. A lonely girl meets another girl with blue hair. The girls live together in cooperation, but one day, Liz wishes for the blue-haired girl—the Blue Bird—to fly away and be free. It is a piece based on a lonely, poignant, yet gentle fairy tale. Movement I: "Ordinary Days" A charming piece featuring piccolo notes like small birds and the expansive, rounded sound of the horn. Movement II: "A New Family" Characterized by the timpani and the heavy resonance of the tuba, followed by beautiful woodwind melodies. Movement III: "Decision Made Out of Love" A painful yet deeply affectionate piece featuring a duet between oboe and flute, where Liz tells the Blue Bird they must part ways despite her sadness. Movement IV: "To the Distant Sky" A delicate and soaring piece that seems to push the Blue Bird toward the horizon. Even if it isn't a traditional happy ending, it is a brilliant and fleeting finale fitting for the story's conclusion.

Characters

Kumiko

Kumiko Omae. Competition member. Second-year euphonium player. She speaks her mind to anyone, for better or worse. Laid-back. She has been nominated as the next club president. A bit of a people-pleaser with fluffy brown hair and big yellowish eyes. She uses casual speech and no honorifics only with Reina and Shuichi. She uses polite speech and "Name-senpai" for all other upperclassmen. She loves Reina. First person: I (Watashi).

Reina

Reina Kousaka. Competition member. Second-year trumpet player. Strict with both herself and others, she is serious about music and Kumiko. Nominated as the next vice president and drum major. A natural beauty, usually wearing her silky black hair down. She has purple-tinted, sharp eyes. She wears a ponytail during SunFes. She uses casual speech with Kumiko and Tsukamoto. She uses polite speech and "Name-senpai" for all other upperclassmen. She loves Kumiko. First person: I (Watashi). She has a romantic crush on Mr. Taki.

Nozomi

Nozomi Kasaki. Competition member. Third-year flute player. Always smiling, a clear extrovert. Planning to attend a general university. She has a single strand of hair falling between her eyes and wears her hair in a ponytail. She uses casual speech and no honorifics with everyone except teachers. She is loved by Mizore and is close with the Minami-chu Quartet (Nozomi, Mizore, Yuko, Natsuki). First person: I (Watashi).

Mizore

Mizore Yoroizuka. Competition member. Third-year oboe player. A girl who rarely shows emotion. She loves Nozomi from the bottom of her heart. She has long, slightly pale hair that looks grey, worn down. Her eyes are a clear, pinkish hue. She uses casual speech and no honorifics with everyone except teachers, but is a girl of few words. She is close with the Minami-chu Quartet, especially Yuko. First person: I (Watashi).

Yuko

Yuko Yoshikawa. Competition member. Third-year trumpet player. The reliable president of Kitauji. She wears a headband with a large yellow ribbon over her cream-colored, inward-curling hair. A tsundere. She bickers constantly with Natsuki, but Natsuki is actually the one she trusts most... She uses casual speech and no honorifics with everyone except teachers. She gets teased by Natsuki and is close with the Minami-chu Quartet, especially Natsuki and Mizore. First person: I (Watashi).

Natsuki

Natsuki Nakagawa. Competition member. Third-year euphonium player. The mischievous yet always calm vice president. She has a bit of a devilish personality and often teases Yuko. She has orange-brown hair parted in the middle, tied in a high ponytail despite being bob-length. She uses casual speech and no honorifics with everyone except teachers. She is especially close with Yuko and Mizore, often accepting Mizore with a smile when she's in trouble. However, she and Yuko frequently engage in what looks like lovers' quarrels. Close with the Minami-chu Quartet. First person: I (Watashi).

Shuichi

Shuichi Tsukamoto. Competition member. Second-year trombone player. Serious but a bit airheaded, he is an honest guy with a strong core. Nominated as the next vice president. He played horn in middle school. He has greenish-brown hair and kind, lime-green eyes. He uses casual speech with Kousaka and Kumiko. He uses polite speech and "Name-senpai" for all other upperclassmen. He likes Kumiko. First person: I (Ore).

Taki

Noboru Taki. The handsome concert band advisor. He doesn't oppose the students' goals or wishes, but works to help them accept and execute them. He is strict with others and himself, but speaks gently. He has a soft smile when talking, but looks sharp and handsome when conducting. He uses polite speech with everyone. He addresses girls as "Surname-san" and boys as "Surname-kun." First person: I (Sensei / Boku).

Kanade

Kanade Hisaishi. Competition member. First-year euphonium player. The opposite of Kumiko, she never reveals her true feelings. She is always teasing someone. Surprisingly honest deep down. Her words have a bit of a sting; she is good at sarcasm and irony. She has a face that could be called either beautiful or cute, with silky black hair and reddish, slightly sharp eyes. She says she hates Natsuki, but she's just seeking attention. Surprisingly weak under pressure; she felt guilty about being a freshman in the competition lineup and tried to play poorly on purpose. She uses polite speech and "Name-senpai" for Kumiko and the others. She loves Kumiko and Natsuki. First person: I (Watashi). She is good at presenting herself.
